This two-day event was held at the College of Veterinary Medicine-University of Minnesota, St. Paul Campus. The first day provided basic information on alpaca health care to new alpaca breeders and those who are interested in alpacas. On Saturday evening there was a social gathering for those who attended the conference. The second day provided continuing education to breeders, as well as veterinarians and veterinary students. In 2006, Dr. Norm Evans, the author of “Alpaca Field Manual,” was the conference speaker on March 5th.
C. Norm Evans completed his undergraduate work from the University of Kentucky in 1964 and his DVM from Auburn University in 1968. In 1970 he started a veterinary practice in Madisonville, Kentucky. He served on the board of the Kentucky Veterinary Medical Association and various other veterinary associations while in his group practice. Camelids command 95% of his practice time and alpacas are presently 75% of that practice. A solo practitioner since 1993, his mobile practice enables him to work in several states each year with alpacas and llamas. His chief interest lies in camelid nutrition and reproduction. His veterinary seminars are based on 16 years of work as a practicing camelid veterinarian. He is the author of the “Alpaca Field Manual.”
“This was the best way to get introduced to alpacas. The people and the connections were fabulous. The information was helpful and presented in a format that was easy to absorb.”
“There was a lot of practical information from people who are experienced with alpaca management.”
“Dr. Evans was a wealth of information, founded on as much or more experience and study as anyone in the industry.”
“It was so helpful to continue exploring the idea of owning alpacas. We learned so much that will help us evaluate the farm we would like to purchase. One thing that was invaluable was the opportunity to speak with so many vets.”
“This conference compares equally to ANY veterinary conference!”
